Writing essays has long been regarded as a monotonous task that drains all your energy out, leaving you with nothing but lethargy. An essay written when you’re barely even interested in writing it will naturally be jaded and will not be your best work.

Other than the general format of an essay, there are no definite rules for writing a great essay. However, there are certain tips which if followed, will result in a beautifully crafted, orderly essay. Your readers will no longer seek only tidbits from the essay, but give their undivided attention to its content. Be it an essay that is due tomorrow or an essay that can take its time to form, we give you these 7 guidelines that enhance your essay writing skills.

  1. Understand the topic and categorise your essay-

Two things could happen. Your topic is handed over to you, or you’re at liberty to choose your topic. In both scenarios, the first and the foremost task you need to perform is understanding your topic. Is your topic a good fit for deep elaboration or a brief explanation? This determination will help you get an idea of the intensity of research you need to do, and that research, in turn, will help you assemble relevant information.

Your next task in line is to categorise your essay type. Your essay can be-

  • Analytical- Packed with key components that break down the idea of the topic through an intensive analysis.
  • Expository- Aimed to explain or elaborate on the topic.
  • Argumentative- Intended to make claims and persuade the reader by attaching evidence that supports the argument.

Once you have a sense of the features mentioned above, you’re all set to proceed.

  1. Spill your thoughts –

Ideating won’t always happen when you force your mind to deliver ideas in a specific direction. Ideating needs to take place effortlessly without any bounds limiting your thinking process. Gather a pen and a notepad, spill all your thoughts that concern the formation of the essay. Once you feel like you’ve gathered enough ideas, you can start placing them in order.

  1. Include interesting details-

Your topic can please your readers if you add details that might spark their interest to read further. Sometimes, a topic that is dry and emotionless might pose problems when it comes down to finding details that could keep the reader hooked on. You could make the best out of such a scenario by tweaking your writing style by using metaphors and figurative speech. Staying true to the content will make a huge difference.  An interesting topic, on the other hand, will make the writing effortless because you are rich with fascinating details that is bound to intrigue the readers.

  1. Sneak in your opinions-

A factual essay that only provides researched information will surely have an impact, but if it’s backed with your opinions, the essay will have a different tone to it altogether. The opinions you give must be very well thought out and sensible. The goal is to show to your readers that, after thoroughly understanding something, this is the opinion you’ve drawn.

  1. Avoid jargon-

Using unnecessary jargon will only make your reader reluctant to read further because your essay will compel the reader to have a dictionary open at all times. Refrain from using words that could complicate the meaning and confuse your readers.

  1. Keep it crisp-

Aside from books, written pieces of any other form receive appreciation if they are brief. The essay should convey the key message in a simple and condensed form. Readers are likely to get bored midway through the essay if you are giving too much incomprehensible information. Missing out on vital information, in the course of trying to keep information brief is not ideal. Note down the critical points and enunciate only those.

  1. Proofread-

Proofreading is so important; it has to be the most important step in an essay’s formation. It gives the essay the final structure after going over any errors, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors. In general, proofreading will help the writer analyse every aspect of the essay, right from the arrangement of information to the delivery of meaning. In this process, the writer can make any additions if he/she feels like something is lacking.

An essay will only be perfect if you are passionate and interested in what you write. Forcing yourself into an essay will not deliver perfection. The elements mentioned above serve as basic guidelines for crafting the perfect essay.
